Hydro Acoustics & Fish Detection Biologist

Dynamic Ocean Consulting Ltd. (Dynamic Ocean) is a boutique environmental consulting firm based in

Port Moody, British Columbia (BC). We are a group of multi-disciplinary applied scientists that bridge the

realms of regulatory and academic applied scientists, with a strong focus on the marine environment.

Our foundation is built upon the belief for the inclusion of western and Indigenous/Inuit sciences into all

aspects of the regulatory life cycle, to support the understanding of existing conditions and effects

assessments. Spatially we primarily work in BC and Nunavut, with a keen interest for expansion to

territories and provinces with a coastline.

The successful candidate will have the ability to work in a team environment and to function

We are seeking candidates who are junior to intermediate level hydroacoustic specialists and are

interested in a field based fixed term position for a short-term project (approximately six months).

Shifts are expected to be two weeks on and two weeks off rotations or weekly shifts of four to five days per week.

Responsibilities

• Manage and implement regulatory compliance requirements for a southern BC project with mobilization out of our Port Moody office.

• Undertake hydro-acoustic monitoring to confirm that in-water construction activities noise levels are below fish and marine mammal acoustic thresholds.

• Operate equipment that will support detection of fish, inclusive of multi-beam sonar (MBS).

• Prepare daily reports to outline commitments have been met.

• Support appropriate data management to confirm that project information is stored anddocumented accurately.

Qualifications and Experience

• Undergraduate degree in biology or a related field, with a Masters preferred.

• Registered Professional Biologist designation with the College of Applied Biologists (or designated as a Biologist in Training).

• Working knowledge of the types of marine mammals (cetaceans, pinnipeds) present in coastal BC waters is considered an asset.

• Knowledge of marine mammals and their species-specific acoustic sensitivities, relative to anthropogenic influences is considered an asset.

• Experience with the design and implementation of autonomous and real-time hydroacoustic hydrophone programs considered an asset.

• Understanding and interpretation of effects assessments to both develop an effects assessment, or review those developed by others.

• Experience working in the regulatory environment with specific experience interpreting the mandates of Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program (DFO-FFHPP).

• Ability to multi-task and adapt to conditions in a fast-paced environment.

• A positive attitude and interest to communicate and engage with the team.

• High level of communication skills for verbal and written, and interpersonal skills.

Certifications

• Occupational First Aid.

• BC Class 5 Drivers License.

• Bear Awareness Certificate.

• CSTS Certificate.

• Confined Space, H2S awareness and Ground Disturbance Level 1 certificates considered an asset.

Compensation, Work Conditions & Training

Contracts will be hourly and will range from $30.00 to $40.00 hour depending on experience. Wages

beyond this level, will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

• Employees will be paid bi-weekly.

• This contract is a shift work role, the durations of which will be discussed with candidates for a preference for two weeks on and one week off, or four days per week. Workdays will range from 10 to 14 hours per day for five to six days per week. There is no work on Sundays or Statutory holidays.

• Overtime hours may be required and will be mutually agreed upon and will be in alignment with the BC Employment Standards Act.

• Working platforms will be on a barge or a small vessel (20 to 30 ft). Candidates therefore need to be physically fit, capable of long workdays in the outdoor environment, and comfortable on moving platforms.

• Onboarding and orientation processes will be performed at the start of the contract.

Training processes may include Drug & Alcohol testing.
