Hannah Solway M.Sc., R.P. Bio (in progress)
Hannah Solway is a marine biologist with international field experience in Canada and Australia, as well as the United States. Her work spans whale, sea turtle, and shark research, with projects ranging from species distribution modelling of baleen whales in the Northwest Atlantic to sea turtle abundance and habitat studies in Cape Byron Marine Park. As a marine mammal specialist, she has also worked with the Marine Animal Response Society, rescuing stranded and entangled whales, dolphins, and seals while contributing to data that supports marine conservation and management.
Hannah specializes in applying statistical analysis, species distribution modelling, and GIS to understand how ocean life overlaps with human activity. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including PLOS ONE, and presented at multiple international symposiums, linking science and outreach. Designed to inform conservation policy, her work helps guide protections for vulnerable species and ecosystems.
She is equally committed to ocean literacy and public engagement. Through her work with Ocean School, she has helped bring ocean science into classrooms around the world, and as both the founder and Chair of Surfrider Atlantic Canada, she has led education campaigns, community cleanups, and advocacy initiatives to make the ocean more accessible and protected. Her leadership in ocean stewardship was recognized when she was named one of Canada’s Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25.
By combining rigorous science, field expertise, and a passion for education, Hannah bridges the gap between research, policy, and community action, working toward a future where marine ecosystems are both better understood and better protected.
